During the cold open, Mikey Day’s Biden initially had some words to share with Congress, “Now tonight, I’m also gonna be talking about my predecessor, mainly because every time I say predecessor, Mike Johnson shakes his head like he just accidentally caught 30 seconds of the show Euphoria.” Sen. Katie Britt delivers the Republican response to President Biden’s State of the Union Address pic.twitter.com/x7mDzO1sWP
The comment was referencing the House Speaker, who was seen shaking his head and rolling his eyes behind Biden throughout his speech on Thursday.
Later that day, Biden moved to the Republican response, delivered by Alabama Senator Katie Britt. "I could stick around and chat some more, but I caught a glimpse of Senator Britt's response and I think she'll do a better job than I could," he remarked, acknowledging the criticism of her speech online.
On Saturday Night Live, Scarlett Johansson surprised viewers by portraying Britt in a skit. In character, Johansson as Britt introduced herself as a representative of Alabama and humorously auditioned for the role of "Scary Mom" with an original monologue titled "This Country is Hell."
The latest episode of SNL featured Josh Brolin as host for the third time, along with musical guest Ariana Grande. Brolin ended his monologue by stripping down to his underwear and taking a cold drive on stage.
Britt's State of the Union response was criticized by both the left and the right for its strange delivery, being compared to bad acting in a Lifetime movie. However, it was later revealed that Britt's story about a woman she met in Texas who was sex trafficked by cartels actually took place during George W. Bush's presidency, not recently as she implied while blaming President Biden's border policies.
As Johansson, portraying Britt, ominously warned Biden that he hasn't seen the last of her, she suggested at the historical lack of political success for those who give State of the Union rebuttals.
