Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon defended his actions that led to his prison sentence on Saturday. In an NBC News interview, he dismissed the Jan. 6 committee’s subpoenas as meaningless and repeated executive privilege arguments that courts have rejected.

The vocal ally of former President Donald Trump must report to prison by Monday to serve a four-month sentence. Bannon defied subpoenas to appear before Congress during the Jan. 6 Capitol attack investigation.

Although convicted in 2022, his sentence was delayed while he appealed. The Supreme Court rejected his last-ditch appeal earlier this week, so Bannon must report to prison by July 1.

When asked about his endgame, Bannon told NBC News it was "victory or death of this republic."

"They shred the Constitution. It's the death of the constitutional American republic we know if we don't win," he continued.

He made a similar claim earlier this month at the conservative Turning Point USA conference.

"Ladies and gentlemen, it's very simple: victory or death!" Bannon declared as the audience cheered.

Bannon’s prison sentence comes from being held in contempt of Congress after defying the Jan. 6 committee’s request for testimony and documents. White House records showed Bannon had multiple conversations with Trump on or just before Jan. 6.

He refused to answer NBC News' question about those conversations, calling them “personal and private” and citing executive privilege claims. The Jan. 6 committee stated this would not exempt him from testifying.

Bannon remains a staunch ally of the former president and continues to spread false claims about the 2020 election fraud.

Former Trump adviser Peter Navarro has been behind bars since March, serving a four-month sentence. Navarro was convicted of the same charges as Bannon.
