On the first anniversary of the devastating quakes, Erdoğan expressed how the pain of the lives lost in the Kahramanmaras-centered earthquakes still haunted them. The total death toll reached 53,537 people, while over 107,000 others were left injured.
Describing the destruction that affected 11 provinces, some of which had historical significance, the President acknowledged that it was truly immense.

Eleven Turkish provinces - Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Elazig, Hatay, Gaziantep, Kahramanmaras, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye, and Sanliurfa - were struck by powerful earthquakes measuring 7.7 and 7.6 in magnitude.
The impact of these tremors was felt as far as Syria, Cyprus, Greece, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Georgia, Armenia, Egypt, and Israel.
As of February 23, 2023, the death toll from the Türkiye earthquakes has tragically risen to 43,566 in Türkiye alone. The number of buildings that have collapsed or suffered severe damage and require demolition has reached 156,000.
Additionally, approximately 43,000 buildings have sustained moderate to light damage. Within the collapsed and heavily damaged structures, there are approximately 507,000 housing units, highlighting the urgent need for emergency housing to accommodate the affected earthquake victims. It is anticipated that this figure will continue to increase.
The scale of these disasters has become a crucial test for the unity, solidarity, and brotherhood of nations, as said by President Erdoğan. Despite the immense challenges, Turkey has demonstrated resilience and successfully overcome this painful and historic trial.
The government has quickly responded to the crisis, mobilizing all available resources, and the nation has united in the face of what is being referred to as the "disaster of the century." President Erdoğan emphasized the government's commitment to fulfilling its promises to the nation, vowing to continue the efforts of rebuilding and revitalizing the affected cities.
