UK Local Elections 2026 results show Reform UK making major gains while Labour loses support across England and Wales. Read the latest updates on Keir Starmer, Nigel Farage, council results, voter anger, and UK political changes.

The latest local election results across England and Wales are showing major changes in British politics, with Reform UK making large gains while Prime Minister Keir Starmer faces growing pressure over Labour’s falling support.

Early counts suggest many voters are unhappy with the speed of economic improvement, rising living costs and pressure on public services. The results are being seen as the biggest political test for Labour since winning the national election in 2024.

    Reform UK’s strong performance

Nigel Farage said the elections marked a “historic shift” in British politics after Reform UK gained hundreds of council seats across England.

The party performed especially well in working-class areas in northern and central England — places that were once strong Labour support bases. Analysts say Reform UK successfully attracted voters concerned about immigration, the economy and dissatisfaction with mainstream parties.

Political experts now believe Reform UK is becoming a serious national force and could challenge the Conservatives for leadership of the political right.

Labour loses support in key areas

Labour has lost control of several councils and suffered setbacks in towns where it traditionally performed strongly.

Many voters interviewed during the election campaign said they expected faster improvements after Labour’s landslide victory in 2024. Although inflation has slowed compared with previous years, many households still face high food, housing and energy costs.

Some Labour supporters also expressed frustration about:

    • pressure on the National Health Service,
    • limited wage growth,
    • housing shortages,
    • and concerns over migration policy.

Despite the losses, Starmer insisted his government still has a long-term plan for economic recovery and public services.

    Conservatives continue to struggle

The Conservative Party also suffered losses in several areas. Since losing power nationally in 2024, the party has struggled to rebuild support.

Some right-wing voters appear to be moving toward Reform UK, while moderate Conservative voters are increasingly supporting the Liberal Democrats in southern England.

This has increased pressure on Conservative leaders to redefine the party’s direction before the next general election.

    Smaller parties gain ground

The Green Party and Liberal Democrats both reported gains in local councils.

The Greens benefited from younger and environmentally focused voters, while the Liberal Democrats performed strongly in suburban and middle-class areas.

Political analysts say the results show Britain’s political system is becoming more divided, with support spreading across several parties instead of just Labour and Conservatives.

    Scotland and Wales

In Wales, Labour faced difficult results as Reform UK and Plaid Cymru gained support in several regions.

In Scotland, the Scottish National Party remained competitive in many areas, although local contests remain close.

    Why these elections matter

Local elections decide who controls councils responsible for services such as:

    • schools,
    • transport,
    • rubbish collection,
    • local planning,
    • and social care.

Although they do not directly change the national government, local elections often show how voters feel about national political leaders.

The 2026 results suggest many British voters are increasingly willing to support smaller or alternative parties when dissatisfied with the main political parties.

For Labour, the challenge will now be rebuilding trust among voters who expected quicker change after the 2024 general election victory.
