US Defense Department making plans to withdraw all U.S. troops from Syria

Ukraine's Foreign Ministry has criticized UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for reportedly planning to attend talks in Kazan, Russia. This comes after he declined an invitation to Kyiv’s global peace summit aimed at ending the war with Russia.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry expressed their frustration online, saying, "The UN Secretary-General declined Ukraine's invitation to the peace summit in Switzerland. But he accepted an invitation from Putin to attend talks in Kazan. This decision does not help the peace process and harms the UN's reputation."

It’s still unclear whether Guterres will actually attend the talks in Kazan this week. Russian officials said earlier this month that Guterres had told Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov that he would be in Kazan.

However, on Monday, UN Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters that Guterres' future travel plans were not yet confirmed.

Kyiv's peace summit in Switzerland, held in June, brought together representatives from many countries. However, Russia was not invited to the summit, and Moscow criticized it as meaningless.

Ukraine’s frustration is tied to the fact that, while trying to push for peace, Russia continues to play a major role in the conflict. Ukraine believes Guterres attending Kazan would send the wrong message.

At this point, there is still uncertainty around whether the UN chief will actually participate in the BRICS summit.
