The United States is working to lower tensions in the Middle East as concerns rise over a possible Iranian attack on Israel. US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, emphasized that the US aims to "deter and defend" against future threats and prevent regional conflict.
This comes after the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, for which Israel has not taken responsibility. The US fears Iran may retaliate against Israel in response. President Joe Biden suggested that a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza could help prevent an Iranian attack. He expressed hope for a ceasefire but acknowledged uncertainty.
Ceasefire talks are scheduled for Thursday, possibly in Doha or Cairo. However, Hamas has reportedly declined to participate. The US, alongside Egypt and Qatar, continues to push for a ceasefire that would release Israeli hostages and allow Palestinian civilians to return home.
Meanwhile, the US approved a $20 billion arms sale to Israel, though the weapons will take years to arrive. At the UN, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield called for an immediate ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza, stressing that a broader regional conflict is not inevitable.
In contrast, Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour criticized the UN Security Council for not doing enough to stop Israel's military actions in Gaza. The conflict has resulted in thousands of deaths on both sides, with significant casualties in Gaza.
As tensions continue to rise, the US has strengthened its military presence in the Middle East, warning of potential attacks by Iran or its allies.
