US defence chief visits Kyiv, announces $100m military aid package

     Nov 21, 2023

In a surprise visit to Kyiv, United States Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin revealed a new military assistance package for Ukraine worth $100 million. This marks Austin's initial visit to Kyiv since April 2022, during which he held meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, and Commander-in-Chief General Valerii Zaluzhnyi on Monday.

During these discussions, Austin promised the United States' enduring support for Ukraine.

Austin promised President Zelenskyy that the United States is standing by Ukraine and will continue to do so. He emphasized the importance of Ukraine's efforts in defeating Russian forces, saying that it matters to the rest of the world.

The US support will be ongoing and the aid package includes anti-tank weapons, air-defense interceptors, and an additional High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS). Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the visit, considering it a significant signal of support.

Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the US has already provided over $44 billion in security support, while allies have contributed an additional $35 billion. This aid includes various forms of assistance, from ammunition to advanced defense systems, battle tanks, and commitments for F-16 fighter jets.

Austin is visiting at a time when there is growing disagreement within the US Congress regarding aid for Ukraine. Despite US defense officials emphasizing that Washington can support both Ukraine and Israel concurrently, certain lawmakers are advocating for prioritizing support for Israel. On the other hand, a minority group of Republicans, though vocal, are against providing additional aid to Ukraine, arguing that taxpayers' funds should be utilized domestically.
