The pilot, whose identity remains unknown, was promptly rescued by South Korean maritime forces and is now in a stable condition. Col. Matthew C. Gaetke, commander of the 8th Fighter Wing, expressed gratitude for the pilot's safe recovery with the assistance of their allies from the Republic of Korea.
The pilot was brought back to Kunsan Air Base, located near the southwestern city of Gunsan, for further assessment.
According to officials, the aircraft encountered an unidentified emergency while on a routine training flight after departing from the base. The cause of the emergency is currently being investigated.
In a separate incident last month, a U.S. military Osprey aircraft crashed into the waters off the coast of Japan, resulting in the death of all eight U.S. airmen on board. On Sunday, the Air Force Special Operations Command announced that U.S. Navy divers had retrieved the remains of one of the two crew members who were still missing.
