US to Send Migrants to Europe: What You Need to Know

The United States is considering referring some migrants in Latin America for resettlement in Greece and Italy in order to discourage people from traveling to the U.S.-Mexico border.

The primary goal is to discourage people in the region from attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally. By offering lawful immigration opportunities in other countries, the U.S. aims to reduce the incentive for migrants to make the dangerous journey to the U.S.

The establishment of Safe Mobility Offices in Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Guatemala allows certain migrants to apply for legal immigration to the U.S. or other countries. By referring some of these applicants to Greece and Italy, the U.S. can manage the flow of asylum seekers more effectively.

The U.S. is collaborating with other countries to share the responsibility of processing and resettling migrants. By involving Greece and Italy, the burden is distributed among multiple nations, rather than solely relying on the U.S. to handle all asylum applications.
