Zelensky denies Ukraine is developing nuclear weapons

He recently said that Ukraine's survival can only be ensured by joining NATO or having nuclear weapons, highlighting the country's unique suffering due to its 1994 decision to denuclearize.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has firmly denied that Ukraine is developing nuclear weapons. During a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels, Zelenskyy clarified that Ukraine has no plans to pursue nuclear weapons. He emphasized that Ukraine remains committed to nuclear non-proliferation and is a party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

Trump’s 2020 election could have averted the 'Ukrainian crisis,' says Putin

Earlier in the day, Zelenskyy had mentioned that Ukraine has only two options: either joining NATO or pursuing nuclear weapons. However, he later clarified that his earlier statement was meant to highlight the importance of NATO membership for Ukraine's security, not to suggest that Ukraine is seeking nuclear capabilities.

Zelenskyy's denial comes in response to a report by the German media outlet Bild, which claimed that Ukraine was preparing to develop nuclear weapons.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry officially denied these claims, repeating Ukraine's commitment to nuclear non-proliferation. This reconfirmation of Ukraine's stance is crucial, as the country continues to navigate the complex and tense geopolitical view formed by its ongoing conflict with Russia.

By clarifying his earlier comments, Zelenskyy aims to prevent further escalation of regional tensions and maintain Ukraine's support to international agreements. As Ukraine continues to face the challenges made by its conflict with Russia, clear communication and strategic alliances remain key components of its defense strategy.

Zelenskyy has been actively promoting his "Victory Plan" to end the war with Russia. He recently presented this plan to the Ukrainian parliament, outlining key elements such as a formal invitation to join NATO, lifting restrictions on long-range strikes on Russia, and refusing to trade Ukraine's territories and sovereignty.

Zelenskyy has also warned of the potential devastation from a third winter of Russia's full-scale war. He stressed the need for more help with air defense and highlighted Ukraine's efforts to strengthen protection.
