Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, BNP vice-chairman and retired Major, was granted bail by a court in Dhaka after being jailed for 21 months in a sabotage case filed with Gulshan police station. His lawyers confirmed that there are no legal obstacles preventing him from leaving the jail.

The bail order for Major (retd) Hafiz was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge As-Shams Jaglul Hossain on Sunday (March 10) after a hearing in the case. Defence lawyer Md Aminul Islam Firoz said, "Major (retd) Hafiz had surrendered to the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on Tuesday and applied for bail, which was denied.

After filing a criminal appeal in the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court, his bail application was approved.

Major Hafiz is now free to be released from jail." Aminul Islam had earlier submitted a bail petition with a condition for an appeal before Judge As-Sams Jaglul Hossain, and after a hearing, the court granted the bail.

He was sentenced to 21 months in prison by the same court on December 28, 2023 for separate charges.

The case files revealed that on June 4, 2011, the defendant attacked and obstructed the police's work on the road in Mohakhali under the Gulshan police station. They also smashed and set fire to passing cars.

After an investigation, Sub-Inspector Kamrul Hasan Talukdar of Gulshan police station filed a chargesheet in court on April 29, 2014. Charges were later framed against the defendant on April 25, 2022.
